Dads Lane: Best Chippy and Bakery Combo in Birmingham

You know about York Road and Pershore Road, but there is another excellent street worth making a beeline for when considering Kings Heath and Stirchley. Dads Lane sits between Stirchley and Kings Heath, and you have probably already heard of it due to its brilliant chip shop, often referred to as the best in Birmingham.

The Best Chippy in Birmingham

Whether you agree or not, there is no denying that there is a special kind of joy in a chippy with a whole annexe for dining in, and that is what Dads Lane Fish Bar has. Now, just over the way, it has a brand new bargain bakery with a sunny outdoor cake terrace, room for indoor dining if you want a coffee with your chocolate concrete, and crusty cobs to go.

The Cake Place: Affordable Treats

The Cake Place is right next door to the Co-op. The co-owners are both in their early 20s, both with the strength and tenacity that comes from being raised well by single moms, and both with a determination to make sweet treats available to everyone. There is barely a thing over £3 in the shop; most stuff is under £2, and the sausage rolls rival Greggs in price—the fresh bakes are £1.50 each.

Parks and Recreation

Are we suggesting making a special journey to Dads Lane just for cake and chips? Well, yes, actually. But if you want to maximise your day, Highbury Park is on Dads Lane too! And Kings Heath park is on the opposite side of the road, as it becomes Avenue Road. Highbury is a 42-acre space, part of Joseph Chamberlain's old estate. It is gorgeous, with a fishpond, woodland walks, and a pretty orchard. There are picnic tables too, for cake and chips. Kings Heath park, on the other hand, is great for kicking a football around, running around its 35 acres, and sitting with friends for picnics on sunny days. There are a couple of fun playgrounds for burning off all the energy from the gigantic massive slabs of old-school cake.

Getting There

The Cake Place and Dads Lane Chip Shop are a 15-minute walk from Pineapple Road train station; just stroll straight down Pineapple Road, and you will be rewarded with pineapple creams and some of the crispiest batter in Birmingham.
