Greggs has unveiled a unique marketing stunt called the 'Ta-Pastry,' an eight-metre long tapestry embroidered in the company's signature blue and gold colors, designed to rival the famous Bayeux Tapestry. The piece will be displayed at London's Design Museum this weekend to coincide with National Sausage Roll Day.
A Modern Masterpiece
The tapestry, crafted by expert embroiderers from Hawthorne and Heaney, features six illustrated chapters chronicling the history of the sausage roll. With Latin headings, the story spans from founder John Gregg's humble bicycle rounds in Newcastle to the launch of the vegan sausage roll. This 200-hour hand-stitched creation aims to celebrate the cultural significance of the Greggs Sausage Roll.
Cultural Connection
The unveiling comes as plans progress to bring the original Bayeux Tapestry to the UK for a special exhibition at the British Museum later this year, expected to attract millions of visitors. Zoe Harris, customer director at Greggs, stated: 'The Greggs Sausage Roll is woven into the very fabric of British culture, which is why for National Sausage Roll Day we've partnered with master royal embroiderers and the Design Museum to create an 8-metre 'Ta-Pastry.' Just as the Bayeux Tapestry captured a turning point in history, this masterpiece is a fitting tribute to this much-loved British icon.'
Expert Praise
Tim Marlow, chief executive and Director at the Design Museum, added: 'Greggs is a great British brand and what better way to mark National Sausage Roll Day than by immortalising this humble pastry in a tapestry? It will be unlike any other woven artwork ever created and a mouth-watering appetiser for the Bayeux mania to come.'
Marketing History
The 'Ta-Pastry' is the latest in a series of headline-grabbing stunts from Greggs. Previous campaigns include an upmarket food fair stall called Gregory and Gregory, jewellery collections, clothing ranges, a Greggs-themed champagne bar with Newcastle's Fenwick department store, and a Greggs-inspired pub.
