A five-star immersive theatre production is returning to Nottingham city centre this summer holiday. Audiences will be turned into guests at a wedding gone wrong on the eve of the Trojan War. The show, called Apple of Discord, will take place at the historic People's Hall in July.
Local theatre company Chronic Insanity is producing the ambitious event. Visitors will get free roam of three floors of the building to spy on characters and tackle quests. They can also chat to a 30-strong cast of legendary gods and heroes. A riotous cabaret will also be running on the ground floor for people to grab a drink.
Previous reviews of the show call it “chaotic, playful, and utterly charming”. The Stage newspaper awarded it four stars and claimed “it deserves a longer run”. The production brings the high quality of a London show but uses local performers and affordable ticket prices.
The Venue
Apple of Discord will take place in the Grade II listed People’s Hall in the heart of Nottingham City Centre. Director Joe Strickland said: “We are trying to create something that is often inaccessible financially and geographically to people in the East Midlands. Our mission is to widen participation in this exciting form of theatre.”
The venue is a Grade II listed building on Heathcote Street managed by the Nottingham Historic Building Trust. The trust is a National Lottery-funded charity committed to saving at-risk heritage assets. Development Officer Josh Packham said: “This is an excellent opportunity to invite residents and tourists of Nottingham to experience The People's Hall like never before.”
Audiences are encouraged to explore the space at their own pace without worrying about catching every single moment. Joe Strickland said: “For the audience, it’s not about seeing all of it necessarily. The point is to immerse yourself in a new world, and know that around every corner there’s going to be something interesting to do, to see, and take part in if you’d like to.”
The event runs from July 20 to July 24. Ticket prices start at £30. Places can be booked online through the Universe platform.
