John McGinn Mural Appears in Aston Villa Star's Hometown of Clydebank
John McGinn Mural in Clydebank Honours Aston Villa Hero

A fun new mural celebrating Aston Villa hero John McGinn has appeared in his hometown of Clydebank ahead of Scotland's World Cup journey. The painting is displayed on a house close to where he grew up, capturing McGinn performing his iconic goggle celebration.

Mural Details

The former St Mirren and Hibernian midfielder previously revealed he first pulled out the famous gesture for his nephew, Jack, who wears goggles while playing football because of his poor eyesight. The striking artwork also displays McGinn's Scotland squad number - seven - and the words: "Made in Clydebank. From Girders", a cheeky nod to Irn-Bru's legendary mid-80s slogan. The Record understands the mural is part of an upcoming campaign for the beloved soft drink.

McGinn's Reaction

McGinn has since spoken out after seeing his likeness transformed into a large-scale mural in his hometown. He said: "The mural is absolutely top class. It's surreal to see myself on the side of someone's house, especially in my hometown. I have fond memories growing up on these streets, so it really does mean a lot. It takes girders to paint something like this on your house. Let's see whose house the next mural goes on!"

The Villa captain attended St Columba's High School and St Peter the Apostle High School. His brothers, Stephen and Paul, also play professional football while his grandfather, Jack McGinn, was once Celtic's chairman and Scottish Football Association president.

Previous Mural

McGinn is no stranger to seeing himself splashed across a wall, with the Witton Arms pub beside Villa Park in Birmingham also boasting a mural of him doing his trademark celebration. A chant adored by the Tartan Army sits alongside it, declaring: "We've got McGinn...Super John McGinn".

Europa League Triumph

McGinn admits Villa's Europa League triumph last week marks the "proudest night" of his career. Villa blew Freiburg away 3-0 in Istanbul to claim their first European trophy for 44 years, and end their 30-year silverware drought. Youri Tielemans and Emi Buendia both scored stunning goals towards the end of the first half, before Morgan Rogers bagged a third for Unai Emery's side.

"I can't believe it to be honest. What we've been through as a club, this club is close to being in a right bad way seven years ago," McGinn told TNT Sports post-match. "V Sports bought the club over. Their one remit was to get it back to the Premier League and back to the levels of before. Tonight was everything we built coming together. The pride I felt with 10 minutes to go knowing we were about to be champions - I can't describe it."

"It means a lot. As a kid growing up I remember Celtic in 2003. It wasn't a great night for them but it was special. I was lucky enough to go to the final at Hampden in 2007. To be here, in 2026, as captain of Aston Villa is incredible. It's the proudest night of my career."
