Midsomer Murders Star Explains Show's Enduring Global Popularity

Daniel Casey, renowned for his role as DS Gavin Troy in ITV's long-running crime drama Midsomer Murders, has unveiled the secrets behind the show's enduring global appeal. As the series celebrates nearly three decades on air, Casey is currently touring the UK with a stage adaptation based on the very first episode, The Killings at Badger's Drift, where he takes on the role of DCI Tom Barnaby.

International Fans Flock to Stage Show

In an exclusive interview, Casey revealed that audiences from across the world are traveling to see the theatrical production. He shared remarkable stories of attendees from Texas, Argentina, Germany, Belgium, Australia, Canada, and Washington DC, all making special trips to experience the live adaptation.

"People have got a real affection for the programme so you've got that huge audience of people who want to come and see how we do it on stage," Casey explained. "I knew it was really, really well loved, of course I did, it's sold to 240 countries worldwide."

The Secret to Lasting Popularity

Casey attributes the show's success to several key factors that have resonated with viewers globally. He describes Midsomer Murders as having a "1950s soul" despite being a contemporary police drama, creating a unique world that doesn't quite exist in reality.

"The countryside is an extra character in the series and I think it just has that gorgeous flavour," Casey elaborated. "I think people worldwide think that's how English people live. The other thing is that British actors play those eccentrics really really well."

He also highlighted the show's family-friendly approach to crime storytelling: "These murders are gruesome but you don't actually see them. It leaves it to your imagination. I think people love that."

From Screen to Stage Adaptation

The stage production, The Killings at Badger's Drift, follows the investigation led by DCI Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Gavin Troy after spinster Emily Simpson is found dead in the picturesque village of Badger's Drift. The story unfolds with:

  • Quirky local characters
  • Startling revelations about hidden desires
  • Long-concealed truths and deadly feuds
  • A memorable conclusion true to the Midsomer Murders style

Stepping into Barnaby's Shoes

Casey admitted he was initially apprehensive about portraying Tom Barnaby on stage, a role made famous by John Nettles in the television series. However, after reading the script, he found the transition natural and fitting.

The actor maintains a close friendship with Nettles and sought his advice when taking on the iconic character. "His first piece of advice was 'do your own thing with it'," Casey revealed. "He just talked to me about what he thought were the important things about the character - his integrity, he's very watchful, he listens, he has incredible empathy."

Casey described Barnaby as "very straight up and down, he's a lovely family man" who serves as "the steady centre" amidst the eccentric world of Midsomer.

As production continues for series 26 of the television show and repeats air on ITVX, Casey's insights reveal why Midsomer Murders continues to captivate audiences worldwide, both on screen and now on stage.
