Phoebe Dynevor Reveals No Bridgerton Return Invitation as Season 5 Production Begins
Phoebe Dynevor, the actress who portrayed Daphne Bridgerton in the hit Netflix series, has disclosed that she has not been approached to reprise her role since season 2. This revelation comes as filming for season 5 is underway, dampening hopes for her imminent return to the show.
From Breakout Star to Absent Character
Dynevor, alongside Regé-Jean Page, rose to fame in 2020 through their performances as Daphne and Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings, in the first season. She made a brief appearance in season 2 but has been absent from seasons 3 and 4, despite vocal fan requests for her comeback.
In a recent interview with Collider in April 2026, Dynevor stated, "I can only speak for myself, I would always come back if I was asked." This echoes her earlier comments to The Direct before season 4's release, where she mentioned she was "still waiting for that call" to return.
Explaining Daphne's Ongoing Absence
Dynevor's last appearance as Daphne was in season 2. She did not feature in season 3, even though her character has a minor role in Colin and Penelope's love story in the original books. Notably, Daphne and Simon were not referenced at all in the third season. Her absence continued into season 4.
In 2023, Dynevor explained to Variety, "Well, I did my two seasons. I’ve done what I wanted to do with that character and she had a great arc." However, she has not ruled out a potential return, leaving the door open for future involvement.
Fan Criticism and Showrunner Teasers
Fans have expressed disappointment on social media over Daphne's prolonged absence. Since her last on-screen appearance, she has missed three sibling weddings—Colin and Penelope, Francesca and John, Benedict and Sophie—and a funeral for John.
Showrunner Jess Brownell hinted at possible future returns for Daphne and Simon in an interview with People. She said, "I think it would be really meaningful, especially when I think forward to Hyacinth and Gregory's story. Daphne and Anthony, and their partners, are such paternal/maternal figures for those younger kids."
Brownell added, "So I would be very interested in trying to get some of those previous leads back for the later run of the show. I haven't spoken to Regé about that. The conversations haven't happened, but the ideas are there."
Looking Ahead to Bridgerton's Future
With season 5 currently in production, it appears Daphne will not feature in this installment. As the series explores new relationships and dynamics, her character remains off-screen for now. Fans remain hopeful for a surprise appearance in later seasons, keeping fingers crossed for her eventual return to the Bridgerton universe.
