Red Ladder Summer Theatre: Myth, Comedy, and Chaos in Yorkshire
Red Ladder Summer Theatre: Myth, Comedy, and Chaos

Red Ladder Theatre Company is presenting a diverse summer programme across Yorkshire, featuring a reimagined myth, a surrealist comedy, and a family-friendly slapstick gladiator show.

Selene: A Myth Reimagined

Award-winning duo Wright and Grainger will perform Selene at St Bartholomew's Church in Armley on June 21. This compelling stage show, created with and performed by Megan Drury, tells the story of a goddess and the dark side of the moon.

Surreally Good: Comedy with Heart

Following his Edinburgh Fringe success, award-winning theatre maker Scott Turnbull brings his acclaimed comedy Surreally Good (age 16+) to the Cluntergate Centre in Horbury on June 27. The show blends lo-fi overhead projector animations with heartfelt storytelling, music, and character comedy, described as 'crafty, unexpectedly moving tomfoolery' by the List.

Colosseum of Chaos: Family Fun

For families, Colosseum of Chaos (age 5+) comes to multiple venues: Cluntergate Centre, Horbury (July 12), BHF Priory Centre, Barnsley (July 22), Queen's Mill, Castleford (July 24), St Bartholomew's Church, Armley (July 25), and The Gate at Belle Isle TMO (July 30). Created by Hull-based performers Andy Ross and Jack Fielding, the show features two ridiculous gladiators who worship an onstage Amazon Alexa, plunging audiences into silly challenges and slapstick battles.

Community Focus

Alice Barber, Red Ladder's programmer, said: 'The whole idea behind Red Ladder Local is taking theatre to people in their communities. It's also a great way of encouraging people to see live productions. In some cases, performances are 'pay what you decide', which can make the difference between somebody going and not.'

Red Ladder Local, part of Leeds-based Red Ladder Theatre Company, has been bringing shows to non-traditional venues like pubs, community centres, and church halls across Yorkshire since 2015. The company thanks its partners: Cluntergate Centre, Horbury; Belle Isle TMO, Leeds; Hawksworth Older People's Support Service, Leeds; St John's Parish Hall, Staincross, Barnsley; BHF Priory Centre, Barnsley; St Bartholomew's Church, Armley; and Queen's Mill, Castleford.
