A city centre bar will close after almost three decades, with its owners describing the move as 'history in the making'. SoBar, which first opened in 1999 as a noodle bar and restaurant in The Arcadian before transitioning into a late-night venue, will shut its doors at the current location in a matter of weeks.
After 27 years, SoBar Birmingham will throw one last party in The Arcadian on May 24 ahead of relocating to a new, as-yet-unannounced base. In a social media post, the venue said: 'Arcadian venue closing party. 24th May. We’re saying goodbye the only way we know how… properly. This is history in the making – don’t miss it.'
The post continued: 'Save the date. Celebrate among Birmingham’s finest crowd and DJ’s as we say goodbye to The Arcadian in preparation for our upcoming move. Tickets now live. DM for any booth, ticket or related enquiries.'
Similarities to RumRum Relocation
The closure of SoBar and its imminent move draws similarities to RumRum, another bar previously situated in The Arcadian. After closing on New Year's Day, RumRum relocated to Exeter Street and reopened earlier this month.
Changes in The Arcadian
Elsewhere in The Arcadian, Levana Bar has been transformed into The Arcadian Food Court, while Nox Bar was replaced by Arcadian Playground, a videogame arcade. With RumRum and SoBar both relocating, the once-thriving nightlife of The Arcadian appears to be coming to an end.
