UK Set for First June Heatwave Starting Friday with 30C

The United Kingdom is preparing for its first heatwave of June, with the Met Office announcing that sweltering temperatures could hit from Friday, June 19. Forecasters are optimistic that the mercury may breach the 30°C mark for the first time this month, as stifling conditions are expected to develop across the nation.

Heatwave Timeline and Temperature Predictions

Temperatures are set to rise through the late twenties towards the end of the week, with a possible peak of 30°C. The Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, Tom Crabtree, stated: "This week's contrasting weather of both heat, rain, and potential thunderstorms is a result of a low pressure system influencing the UK from the northwest." He added: "The southerly flow stalls a front over the west of the UK whilst allowing temperatures to build in the southeast."

Crabtree highlighted that Friday is expected to be the warmest day of the week, but noted that peak temperatures could be impacted by cloud cover. "Temperatures are likely to range from 26 to 28°C, with the potential to approach 30°C in parts of southeast England. Elsewhere temperatures will remain closer to average but could be warm at times in parts of Wales and the west Midlands," he explained. He advised the public to keep an eye on forecasts as the week progresses for a clearer picture over the weekend.

Regional Weather Outlook

The BBC's weather presenter Matt Taylor indicated that all parts of the UK should feel warmer this week compared to the previous one. Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick elaborated: "Throughout the week things are heating up in the south and south east. We've got high pressure starting to build and there's a warm plume moving up through continental Europe." She added: "Whether or not it'll be a heatwave remains to be seen as there's still a lot to play for, but things are certainly turning a lot warmer, if not maybe even hot, by the end of the week, although this is mostly confined to the south east. Other areas will warm up, but it's also very humid so they are likely to be cloudy, with rain and showers."

Health Alerts Issued

In response to the anticipated heat, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow heat health alerts lasting from Wednesday, June 17, until Monday, June 22. These alerts cover the East Midlands, East of England, London, and the south-east. Residents in these regions are advised to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups, as temperatures are forecast to climb significantly.
