Birmingham's Dave's Hot Chicken Seeks Permission for New Street Terrace
Dave's Hot Chicken Seeks New Street Terrace Permission

Dave's Hot Chicken, a popular fried chicken chain on New Street in Birmingham, has submitted an application to the city council for a pavement license to install outdoor tables and chairs. If approved, the restaurant could create a sunny terrace for al fresco dining in the heart of the city centre.

Restaurant Seeks Outdoor Space Amid Roadwork Completion

The branch opened on July 1, 2025, and for half of the past year, it has faced significant roadworks directly outside its prominent corner location. New Street has been undergoing major public realm improvements, with much of the construction now finished. The restaurant's application aims to capitalize on the newly upgraded pedestrian-friendly environment.

Tuesday, June 30, was the final day for public objections to the plans, with the council set to make a decision thereafter. A number of other New Street venues, including Gail's Bakery, have also applied for pavement licenses in recent months.

New Street's Transformation and 'Chicken Quarter'

The old temporary vehicle mitigation barriers on New Street have been replaced with permanent bollards and sliding mechanisms to prevent illegal vehicle access in the high-foot-traffic area. Upgraded paving has made the upper end of the street more open and welcoming. Dave's Hot Chicken joins KFC, Wingstop, Popeyes, and Nando's in what has been dubbed the 'Chicken Quarter' on New Street.

If permission is granted, New Street could become a haven for outdoor dining once all construction is complete. The road benefits from afternoon sun, with nearby Victoria Square and Chamberlain Square already popular for after-work drinks and relaxation.
