The owner of a proposed entertainment venue at Parkgate Shopping Centre in Shirley is defending his plans after local traders raised concerns about attracting youths and anti-social behaviour. Nilesh Pandit wants to transform the former Poundland unit into 'Hideout', offering electronic darts, arcade games, and sports screening, with alcohol served daily between 11am and 11pm.
Trader Objections
Neighbouring salon Bei Capelli has formally objected to the licence application, warning that the shopping centre is already experiencing problems. The salon stated: "The shopping centre is becoming a playground for youngsters with balaclavas riding through and robbing elderly women of their handbags." Other traders expressed fears the venue would attract troublesome teenagers on bikes, exacerbating existing issues.
Owner's Rebuttal
Mr Pandit, who already runs Rainforest Rascals softplay and Blnded cafe in the centre, insisted the venue would benefit the area. He said: "Shirley desperately needs something and I hope this will bring what people want." He promised robust security measures and strict entry requirements, including a ban on anyone wearing balaclavas. "If they are wearing balaclavas we wouldn't let them in. You will have to dress, act and speak correctly," he added.
Decision Pending
Solihull Council's licensing panel will decide on the application at a hearing scheduled for July 8. The outcome will determine whether the Hideout can open and serve alcohol as proposed.
