Malvern Theatres to Transform with £20m Levelling Up Fund Investment
£20m redevelopment for Malvern Theatres set for 2026

A historic and popular theatre in Worcestershire is poised for a major transformation after securing a significant £20 million investment from the government's Levelling Up Fund.

Groundbreaking Project Details and Timeline

Malvern Theatres will launch this ambitious redevelopment scheme in January 2026, with the completed project scheduled to open to the public in late 2027. Described as one of the district's most ambitious cultural endeavours, the investment aims to create a world-class facility.

The centrepiece of the state-of-the-art development will be a brand new, modern 240-seat studio theatre. This will be complemented by the creation of new workshop spaces and significant enhancements to the existing Forum Theatre, focusing on improving both audience comfort and accessibility.

Enhanced Access and New Community Spaces

A key focus of the project is making the venue more welcoming and easier to navigate. An upgraded park-side entrance will feature better-spaced stairs, additional handrails, improved lighting, and the installation of a new lift.

Furthermore, the plans include the addition of a small community amphitheatre, providing a versatile outdoor space for local events and performances. The redesigned auditorium will allow the theatre to expand its programming to include more community theatre, family entertainment, and new writing.

Leadership and Local Impact

The project is a collaboration between Malvern Hills District Council, Malvern Theatres, and local contractors Speller Metcalfe. The design has been handled by renowned theatre architects Burrell Foley Fischer.

Fred Moroni, Chief Executive Officer at Malvern Theatres, stated the project would be "transformative not only for Malvern Theatres but for the entire region", highlighting expanded opportunities for participation in the arts.

Councillor John Gallagher, Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, called it an "incredibly exciting moment" that will create a "powerhouse for creativity, learning, and entertainment".

The development is expected to generate hundreds of construction jobs, provide a substantial boost to the local economy, and cement Malvern's reputation as a destination for top-tier performing arts. To facilitate the works, the Grange Road North Car Park will be closed for the duration of the project.
