Youth-Led Play 'Unfinished Business' Premieres at New Diorama Theatre
Youth-Led 'Unfinished Business' Premieres at New Diorama

Company Three's bold new youth-led production, Unfinished Business, is set to premiere at the New Diorama Theatre this summer, offering an exploration of choice, agency, and the power of young people to shape their own decisions.

Co-created with Teenagers from Islington

Created with ten teenagers from Islington, Unfinished Business imagines a future where human connection is replaced by virtual life and questions whether young people have the power to choose their own futures. The play continues Company Three's mission to place young people's art and ideas at the heart of the conversation.

At a time when teenagers are often sidelined, Company Three remains committed to giving young people the space and tools to articulate their experiences through ambitious, co-created theatre.

Set in the Year 2100

The play is set in the year 2100, when no one goes out anymore and everything happens in the virtual world. It explores themes of choice and ownership — why we make the decisions we do, and what would happen if these teenagers rewrote their past choices. A group of teenagers are challenged to find disregarded objects from the past, and what they discover changes how they see themselves and the choices they make.

For nearly two decades, Company Three has pioneered a long-term, co-creation model, working with teenagers over years to create performances that reflect their views. This new play builds on that unique approach and is the first show directed by Company Three's associate director, Mariana Aristizábal Pardo.

Return to New Diorama Theatre

Company Three returns to New Diorama Theatre with Unfinished Business after the success of #BlackIs (2023) and Eighteen (2021) there. Their work with young people across Islington has been performed at the Park Theatre, Pleasance Theatre, the Yard Theatre, the National Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, and on the BBC, establishing them as one of the UK's leading companies making theatre with young people.

Voices from the Cast

Mazen, 17, a Company Three member and cast member, said: 'This show started with a simple question: what would we change about our pasts and why? That led us on a series of reflections and exploring all the things that could've been, which has been an incredible journey. I'm excited to be able to tell my story, whilst connecting with the deeply personal stories of everyone involved.'

Mariana Aristizábal Pardo, associate director of Company Three, said: 'Unfinished Business aims to open up possibilities of wonder, hope and joy, despite all the difficult things that we are living through. Young people and Youth Theatre show us how joy and imagination can also be a political stance, like a way of saying “we're going to resist by thinking of new alternative possibilities”.'
