Firefighters from West Midlands Fire Service were called to a large grass fire on Thursday evening, with crews from multiple stations dispatched to tackle the blaze. The incident occurred in an area near Birmingham, with the fire spreading rapidly due to dry weather conditions.
Fire Spreads Across Open Land
The fire, which broke out around 6pm, affected a significant area of grassland. Crews from stations including Smethwick, Oldbury, and Brierley Hill were deployed, with around 20 firefighters working to contain the flames. Aerial footage showed smoke plumes visible from miles away.
According to West Midlands Fire Service, the fire was brought under control by approximately 8pm, with crews remaining on scene to dampen hotspots. No injuries were reported, and no properties were damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation, though dry grass and strong winds likely contributed to its rapid spread.
Public Urged to Take Precautions
In a statement, a West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said: 'We would urge the public to be extremely careful in dry conditions. Discarded cigarettes or glass bottles can easily start a fire. We also remind people not to have barbecues in open areas during dry spells.'
This incident follows a series of grass fires across the region in recent weeks, with fire services warning of increased risk due to prolonged dry weather. The Met Office has issued a wildfire warning for parts of England, with temperatures expected to remain high.
Community Impact and Response
Local residents reported seeing smoke and flames from nearby roads, with some expressing concern about the proximity of the fire to homes. One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: 'It was quite frightening seeing the flames so close. The firefighters did an amazing job getting it under control so quickly.'
The fire service has reminded the public to report any signs of fire immediately and to avoid lighting fires in the open during dry periods. Crews will continue to monitor the area overnight to ensure the fire does not reignite.
