Aldi has confirmed that shoppers need to keep potatoes away from another food item in their kitchens. The German budget supermarket, competing with Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda, and others, has shared essential guidance for potato buyers.

The retailer has partnered with food storage expert Kate Hall, also known as TheFullFreezer, who aims to help educate and inspire shoppers. Kate has provided crucial advice for those purchasing potatoes, urging Aldi shoppers in Birmingham to be a Spuddy Buddy.

Potatoes are one of the most wasted foods in the UK, but they freeze really well once parboiled or cooked, Kate explained. Roasties, mash, and jackets can all be frozen: just cool them first, freeze, then reheat straight from frozen. A bonus tip is to store spuds away from onions to stop them sprouting too soon.

Kate also shared guidance for milk storage. To prevent milk from going off before use, keep it in the middle of the fridge rather than the door, as it stays colder for longer. Milk can also be frozen in portions and defrosted in cold water when needed. If it splits, a quick blend restores it.

Regarding eggs, Kate confirmed they can be frozen by cracking and whisking first, then freezing in usable amounts. Defrost in cold water when needed; they may look different but are perfect once cooked.

For bananas, Kate recommended peeling, slicing, and freezing them, ideal for smoothies or banana ice cream. The same applies to many other fruits and vegetables. Bread, baps, and rolls can be frozen sliced for quicker defrosting. Even a sandwich made with frozen bread in the morning will be ready to eat by lunchtime, offering an easy, waste-free solution that keeps the rest of the lunch cool.
