Edge Hill University's Big Campus Clear Out Champions Sustainability on Zero Waste Day

Edge Hill University is preparing for its annual Big Campus Clear Out, coinciding with International Zero Waste Day. The 2026 theme, 'Don’t Think Waste - Think Opportunity', encourages viewing discarded items as valuable resources, reflecting Edge Hill's strong commitment to sustainability.

Promoting a Circular Economy and Reducing Environmental Impact

The Big Campus Clear Out is Edge Hill's yearly campaign that urges students to donate unwanted items, aiming to cut down waste as many prepare to leave their accommodation. Dr Keziah Stott, corporate sustainability manager, emphasized the initiative's benefits.

"The Big Campus Clear Out is a fantastic opportunity for Edge Hill to reduce our environmental impact and promote a circular economy by ensuring that students’ unwanted food and household items are put to good use rather than going to waste," said Dr Stott.

She added, "Students really enjoy taking part because many of them are very conscious of their carbon footprint and protecting the environment. It’s also an opportunity for us to support some incredible local charities by providing much-needed donations."

Collaborative Efforts and Collection Process

The University's Corporate Sustainability team works with Site Services, Accommodation, and the Students’ Union to gather items from halls of residence. Students can drop off donations at designated points on the Ormskirk campus.

Volunteer staff and students then sort the contributions and decide which charities will receive them. In 2025, supported organizations included Upholland Tawd Vale Lions in Skelmersdale, which received over 100 boxes of clothing, household items like cookware, toiletries, books, and stationery.

Benefits for Students and Community Support

Students also gain from the donations. For instance, the International Student Support Team redistributes kitchenware, stationery, and small electrical items through the Recycle and Reuse Scheme. Additionally, smart clothing is donated to the Student Life team’s Interview Clothing Project, allowing students to borrow outfits for job interviews.

This initiative not only reduces waste but also strengthens community ties by aiding local charities and providing practical support to students, reinforcing Edge Hill's dedication to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
