Households across Staffordshire are being urged to apply for significant financial support to cover the cost of heating their homes this winter. The call comes as part of the government's Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme, which offers up to £30,000 for energy-efficient improvements.
Who is Eligible for the Free Heating Support?
The scheme is primarily aimed at supporting low-income and vulnerable residents. To qualify, your total household income must be £36,000 or less. You may also be eligible if you receive means-tested benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Income Support.
The local authority has also indicated that households experiencing vulnerability to the cold, problem debt, or financial hardship should apply. Importantly, they note that there are limited circumstances where households with an income greater than £36,000 may also be eligible, so residents are encouraged to check if unsure.
Applicants must live in Staffordshire and reside in a property that is difficult or expensive to heat, requiring energy-saving upgrades. The scheme is open to homes connected to the mains gas network ('on-gas') and those using other fuels like electricity, oil, LPG, or coal.
What Home Improvements Are Covered?
The grant, administered by local authorities, can fund a range of improvements designed to slash energy bills and keep homes warmer. The specific measures installed will depend on what is most suitable for the property.
Eligible households could receive upgrades such as:
- Insulation to prevent heat loss.
- Solar panels to generate renewable electricity.
- Air source heat pumps for efficient heating.
These improvements are intended to help families stay warm, reduce their carbon footprint, and save money on their energy bills in the long term.
How to Apply for the Warm Homes Grant
The application process is not operated on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, the council uses a prioritisation process to ensure support reaches those who need it most, focusing on health, wellbeing, and potential energy savings.
Eligibility checks will be handled by the scheme's customer journey support partner, 'Community Home Solutions'. Residents can apply online or by calling the council on 0115 718 1822 (standard call rates apply).
With winter underway, the council is encouraging all Staffordshire residents who believe they may qualify to act promptly to access this vital support for making their homes warmer and more affordable to heat.
