Couple Films 'Beast of Bodmin' in Devon, Experts Call It Best Evidence Yet

A couple celebrating a birthday holiday in Devon have captured compelling video footage of a large, mysterious black animal, with wildlife enthusiasts and big cat experts declaring it the most convincing proof yet of the legendary Beast of Bodmin.

Unexpected Sighting During Birthday Celebration

Karen Carter and her husband were enjoying a glass of prosecco in the conservatory restaurant of their hotel near Dartmouth, Devon, when Karen noticed movement on the adjacent golf course. The couple, both avid wildlife watchers, were just 200 metres away from the creature and managed to record a 36-second video at 4:05pm on February 5.

"We couldn't go out and investigate further as we were both in dressing gowns," Karen explained. "We are both keen wildlife watchers but we're unsure what this was due to its size." The animal was observed moving through a field and vegetation before disappearing from view.

Expert Analysis Points to Large Cat

Rick Minter, host of the Big Cat Conversations podcast, provided a detailed analysis of the footage. "The long body, the apparent bulk, the thick tail and the thick legs do suggest a large cat which people might describe as a 'panther'," he stated. "In Britain the main specific candidate for a panther is a leopard in its black form."

Minter noted that the animal's cautious movement and gait are consistent with a large predator, and while scale is difficult to determine without reference points, many experienced observers believe it to be a very large cat, possibly a black leopard.

Enthusiasts Hail Footage as Definitive Proof

The video has generated significant excitement among big cat enthusiasts. Lisa Kay commented, "It does look big, amazing you managed to get footage." Tasha Wilkie added, "Best proof filmed I've seen so far," while Mandy Priest stated, "Definitely looks like a big cat to me."

Ruth Stephens, who claims to have witnessed similar animals in daylight, said, "One hundred per cent panther. Having witnessed them myself in daylight, head shape and tail are right." Chris Smith observed, "Big and bulky, unafraid of anything, looks and moves like big cat."

Historical Context of the Beast of Bodmin

The sighting occurred approximately 50 miles from Bodmin Moor, an area that has been the centre of big cat lore since the 1970s. There have been over 60 suspected sightings of a mysterious 'big cat' in the region, commonly referred to as the Beast of Bodmin.

This latest video evidence adds to the ongoing mystery and debate surrounding the existence of large, non-native predators in the British countryside. The couple's footage provides a rare, clear visual record that experts are carefully examining to determine the true nature of the animal captured on film.
