Wirral Musician Hosts Fundraiser After Beating Cancer
Tony Gallagher, a 62-year-old musician from the Wirral, is set to perform at Future Yard in Birkenhead this April, marking a significant milestone in his journey to recovery from late-stage colon cancer. Diagnosed in 2023, Tony has now been declared cancer-free and is organising a special live music event to give back to the NHS staff at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, specifically supporting cancer and stroke services at Arrowe Park Hospital.
A Personal Journey Through Diagnosis and Treatment
Tony recalled the challenging moment of his diagnosis, which he had to share with his wife over the phone after undergoing a colonoscopy alone. He chose not to have anaesthesia so he could watch the procedure on screen, immediately sensing something was wrong. "The room went quiet," he said. "Afterwards, a senior nurse told me I had cancer. I had to ring my wife myself. That moment stays with you." He described feeling numb, comparing the experience to facing a daunting uphill bike ride, but remained determined to see it through.
Emotional Scars and Compassionate Care
The emotional toll of his battle has left deeper scars than he initially realised. However, Tony fondly remembers the kindness of his nurses, who sang and danced with him during his recovery, highlighting the compassion that made a lasting impact. "Waking up each morning is something I no longer take for granted," he shared, emphasizing his commitment to spending his time on meaningful projects rather than fruitless pursuits.
From Birthday Celebration to Fundraiser
Originally planned as a 60th birthday celebration that was postponed due to his hospital stay, the event evolved into the 'Give Back Bands' fundraiser. It will feature four bands: Studio 5, Bug House Beasts, Random Inspiration, and The Editions. They will perform a lively mix of classics and crowd favourites, including songs from The Commitments, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, and The Who, as well as original tracks written by friends who have passed away.
Hospital Leadership Praises Initiative
Janelle Holmes, chief executive at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, expressed her appreciation for Tony's efforts. "Hearing Tony's story is a powerful reminder of why the care our staff provide every day matters so much," she said. "The kindness and compassion shown by our teams stays with patients long after they leave hospital, and it means a great deal that Tony has chosen to give back through this fundraiser."
Event Details and Ticket Information
The fundraiser will take place at Future Yard in Birkenhead on April 18, with doors opening at 6.30pm. Tickets are priced at £16.80, with discounted rates of £11.20 available for Blue Light and key workers. Tony encourages everyone to attend, noting that cancer affects one in two people. "If you enjoy seeing people doing their best for a good cause, come along, have a laugh, sing your heart out and help us raise money for such a great cause," he added.
