Free TV Licence for Over-75s on Pension Credit Confirmed

TV Licensing has confirmed that television licences will be reduced to zero cost for individuals receiving a specific Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit. If you are aged 75 or over and receive Pension Credit, you are eligible for a free TV licence.

Eligibility for Free TV Licence

According to the DWP website: 'You can get a free TV licence if you’re 75 or older and you either get Pension Credit or live with your partner who gets Pension Credit.' The licence covers everyone living at your address. You can apply when you are 74 if you already receive Pension Credit. However, you must continue to pay for your licence until the end of the month before your 75th birthday; after that, your free licence will take effect.

Discounted Licences for Care Home Residents

If you live in an eligible residential care home, supported housing, or sheltered accommodation, you may obtain a TV licence for just £7.50. To qualify, you must be either retired and over 60 or disabled. Your housing manager can verify eligibility and submit the application on your behalf.

Discount for Blind Individuals

A 50% discount is available if you are registered blind or live with someone who is. The licence must be in the blind person's name. If it is not, you can make a new application to transfer it into their name, providing your existing TV licence number. TV Licensing adds: 'If you are blind (severely sight impaired) and can provide the appropriate evidence, you are eligible to apply for a 50% concession. Your licence will also cover anyone who lives with you. If you are partially sighted (sight impaired) you are not eligible. If you already have a blind licence please sign in to renew it.'

When a Licence Is Not Required

If your digital box only plays sounds and does not show TV programmes, you do not need a licence.
