Julie Hetherington, a former chartered accountant from Northfield, has transformed her career into a mission to support families. Feeling isolated as a new parent, she launched a TinyTalk franchise in 2010, creating a safe and welcoming space for families to connect. Over 16 years, she has worked with more than 1,500 families, helping to improve positive mental health.
From Accountant to Community Builder
Julie’s journey began with her daughter, who remains her inspiration. “I launched my franchise back in 2010 because of my daughter who was and will always be my ‘why’,” she said. “Back then, baby and toddler classes were scarce, and as a new parent feeling isolated and overwhelmed, I knew the importance of support and connection. I was determined to create a space where families could come together, learn, and grow.”
Classes Across Birmingham
Julie now runs eight classes a week (soon to be nine) at venues including Holloway Hall Community Centre, Little Bunnies Montessori Nursery, Allens Cross Community Centre, Bournville Social Club, and Northfield Baptist Church. The classes cater to newborns through to toddlers ready for school. TinyTalk teaches everyday British Sign Language (BSL) signs, enabling adults to communicate with their little ones before they find their voice. But beyond signing, the classes build community. Dads, grandparents, foster carers, adoptive parents, and family friends all attend.
Award-Winning Impact
TinyTalk recently ranked in the Top 100 Children’s Activity Providers in the UK at the Club Hub Awards for the second year running, after winning a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. Julie’s work has a profound impact on mental health. “I love hearing how my classes have positively impacted people’s mental health after having a baby, how we have helped with anxiety, fostered communication skills, and provided a social outlet. It’s incredibly rewarding,” she said.
Being her own boss allows Julie the flexibility to attend school runs and events for her own children, now nearly 18 and 12. “TinyTalk is more than just my business; it’s a lifeline for parents and a joyful experience for children. Together, we can navigate parenthood, build lasting connections, and have fun along the way – oh, and a cuppa and biscuit too!”
