Details of who will qualify for Winter Fuel Payments worth up to £300 later this year have been confirmed. The support payments are no longer universal for all over-65s following eligibility changes over recent years. This means not everyone gets to keep the money, which usually drops into bank accounts during November.
Changes to Eligibility Criteria
The bonus payments to help keep homes warm during the coldest months are now linked to income. The income threshold for Winter Fuel Payments has been set at £35,000. These rules will apply once again in 2026. Pensioners with annual incomes over that amount no longer qualify.
How the Payment System Works
Under what some could find a confusing system, eligible pensioners are initially paid the cash, only for it then to be taken back by HMRC at a later date. It is important to bear in mind that the cash will later be taken back in instalments. The Government decided it was a waste of money handing the winter allowance to wealthy retirees. It is largely accepted that these people are comfortable enough financially to manage without the help.
Payment Amounts
The winter allowance is designed to help vulnerable older people keep their homes warm during the coldest months. Those aged under 80 get £200, while over-80s receive £300.
