Edge Hill University Podcast Shines Light on Men's Mental Health
Edge Hill University has launched a compelling new podcast series that directly addresses the crucial issue of men's mental health. The Edge Ahead features an in-depth conversation with special guest Jake Mills, the founder of Chasing the Stigma and the innovative Hub of Hope platform.
Breaking the Silence Around Mental Health
Jake Mills brings his considerable expertise to the discussion, focusing on the importance of breaking the silence that often surrounds mental health challenges. He shares valuable insights about the resources available to support those in need, drawing from both his professional experience and personal journey.
During the podcast, Jake recounts his early adulthood struggles with anxiety and depression, which he initially failed to recognise as mental health issues. "I started to recognise that I was reaching a point, the best way to describe it was like I was treading water," he explains. "It felt like a major effort every single day."
A Turning Point in Personal Recovery
Jake describes a particularly dark moment when he was discharged from therapy, a process he found flawed and transactional. This experience led him to believe he had exhausted his options for professional help. "I thought that the way I am feeling is how I am always going to feel because I tried to get help and it didn't work," he reveals. "So, I thought 'this is me now'."
The crucial turning point came through the unwavering support of his girlfriend Rachael (now his wife) and his parents. Their non-judgmental response shattered his fears of rejection and shame, bringing his hidden struggles into the open where they could be properly addressed.
From Personal Struggle to National Resource
The concept for the Hub of Hope solidified when Jake decided to speak publicly about his experiences. Despite facing initial online mockery, his story gained traction when shared by prominent figures including Emma Watson and James Corden. This exposure led to an overwhelming number of people reaching out for advice and support.
Recognising he couldn't personally help everyone who contacted him, Jake created what he describes as "a bridge, a central place to connect people with the support they needed." The Hub of Hope began as a simple resource list compiled in his mother's house and has grown into a comprehensive directory available through both app and website.
Challenging Myths About Men and Mental Health
During the podcast conversation, both Jake and host Chris challenge the common misconception that men don't want to discuss their mental health. They argue instead that men simply need safe, non-judgmental spaces to have these conversations.
"As soon as you give people an avenue to talk about this stuff, people will take it," Jake asserts. "Men do want to talk about their mental health, but we just want to know where we can." He notes that whenever he gives talks, there's consistently a queue of men waiting to share their own experiences and show solidarity.
