Fire in Lozells Spreads to Supermarket After Rubbish Blaze

Firefighters tackled a blaze that began in rubbish behind shops on Villa Road in Lozells, Birmingham, and spread to a nearby supermarket on Friday, July 3. The fire, which involved an eight-metre-by-eight-metre pile of rubbish including white goods, prompted a response from three fire engines and police who blocked the road.

Fire Spreads to Supermarket Roof

West Midlands Fire Service received the initial call at 2.39pm to reports of smoke. One engine was sent initially, but the response was increased to three pumps—two from Handsworth and one from Highgate—after the extent of the fire became clear. The blaze had spread to the roof of a supermarket at the junction of Villa Road and Lozells Road, with domestic properties also nearby.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “We received the initial call at 2.39pm to reports of a smoke in the area. We sent one crew in the area but when we realised the extent of the fire increased that to three pumps. We sent two from Handsworth and one from Highgate.”

Firefighters Extinguish Blaze

Firefighters worked to put out the fire, which involved rubbish in the open, including white goods. The fire had also affected an adjoining property—the roof of a supermarket. Officers from West Midlands Police managed traffic in the street, with the road blocked. The fire was extinguished, and crews left the scene at 4.15pm.

The spokeswoman added: “The fire involved rubbish in the open, some eight metres by eight metres, which included white goods. It had spread to an adjoining property – the roof of a supermarket. There were also domestic properties nearby. Our firefighters put the fire out and left the scene at 4.15pm.” No injuries were reported.
