Tributes Paid to 'Top Man' Found Deceased at Wolverhampton School
Emergency services were called to Smestow Academy on Windmill Crescent in Wolverhampton after a 45-year-old man was discovered with injuries within the school grounds. Despite the efforts of responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday morning, January 19.
Police Investigation Underway
West Midlands Police have launched an investigation into the death, which is currently being treated as unexplained. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole stated that the force is in the early stages of its inquiry and urged the public to avoid speculation. He emphasised that extra officers will be present in the area to provide reassurance to the concerned community.
The police reported that the man was last seen at 1am on Wheatsheaf Road in Wolverhampton and was later sighted on the school grounds at 7.15am. He was described as wearing a distinctive camouflage jacket, a grey gilet, jeans, and a beanie hat, while carrying a red rucksack and possibly wearing sunglasses.

Tributes have flooded social media for the man, named locally as Neil, with friends and locals describing him as a 'top man' and 'proper genuine bloke'. One heartfelt message read: 'Rip brother, top man. We got some good memories, you’ll be missed by many.' Another tribute echoed the sentiment, stating: 'What a top bloke, was any chatting to him other day.'
The school has issued an update following the tragic discovery, offering specialist support to students affected by the incident. Authorities are appealing for anyone with information, particularly those who may have seen the victim in the early hours of Monday morning, to come forward by calling 101 and quoting log 1452 of January 19.
