Martin Kemp's Terrifying Garden Ordeal
Spandau Ballet icon Martin Kemp has spoken publicly for the first time about a frightening chainsaw incident that resulted in an emergency hospital visit, mere weeks before his anticipated appearance on I'm A Celebrity.
The 64-year-old musician was rushed to A&E after the accident, which occurred while he was attempting to cut wood in his Hertfordshire garden. His son, Roman, later revealed the severity of the situation, stating his father had been "lucky not to lose his hand."
The Moment of the Accident
Recounting the event ahead of his jungle entry, Kemp explained the precise moment things went wrong. "I was taking the scabbard off," he said, referring to the chainsaw's protective cover. "It was electric and it came to life."
The family first learned of the incident when Martin shared a picture of his heavily bandaged fingers in their WhatsApp group, a detail Roman disclosed to his podcast listeners.
Road to Recovery and Jungle Readiness
Kemp was keen to reassure everyone about his recovery. "It was about three weeks ago now," he stated. "It has all healed up. It is pretty amazing how skin heals like that." He took full responsibility for the mishap, admitting, "It was my own fault, nobody else's."
Despite the scare, he emphasised that the hospital visit was largely precautionary. "It was really just for an injection to make sure everything was all right," he clarified. "They wrapped it up and that was it." Crucially for ITV producers, he never believed the injury would prevent him from participating in the reality show.
Looking ahead to the jungle, Kemp is already anticipating the infamous Bushtucker Trials, though he has expressed particular concern about the eating challenges. He chuckled, "I do not think I am going to get given a burger in there at all," noting that he and his wife Shirlie follow a "practically vegan" diet at home, though he still eats meat while travelling.
The close call with the chainsaw hasn't dampened his spirit for challenges. However, he playfully worries that his son Roman, a previous jungle campmate, might influence his experience. "I don't think it's the public that's going to target me...it's Roman who is going to bring all his followers to target me," he jested.
