Aston Villa's director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, has confirmed that goalkeeper Emi Martinez will remain at the club this summer, ending speculation linking him with a move to Juventus.
Juventus interest blocked
Juventus had identified the Argentina international as a prime target after their move for Liverpool's Alisson was blocked. However, as previously reported by BirminghamLive, Villa were keen to keep Martinez in their squad and unwilling to negotiate his departure.
“The goalkeeper’s future is settled, he is staying with us, and we have no intention of letting him go this summer,” Vidagany told 365 Scores. “The team needs his efforts and extensive experience, and he is a very important element in our project for next season.”
Club's position clarified
Vidagany dismissed media reports linking Martinez with a move to Turin. “All the news published by the media about his departure to Juventus does not reflect the club’s true position,” he said. “Martinez is a very important player for us, and we expect him to continue delivering his outstanding performances alongside his teammates.”
Contract and history
Martinez, who turned 34 in September, has three years remaining on his Villa contract, which runs until 2029. Last summer, Manchester United considered signing him on deadline day but instead completed a move for Senne Lammens. Since joining from Arsenal six years ago, Martinez has made a total of 256 appearances for Villa, establishing himself as a key figure in the squad.
