Outdoor Screen Plan at Stourbridge Pub Sparks Resident Backlash
Outdoor Screen Plan at Stourbridge Pub Sparks Backlash

An application by a pub in Norton to show films and sport on an outside screen has sparked a backlash from residents. Marston's PLC applied to Dudley Council for a variation to the licence of the Gigmill in Stourbridge to allow a range of alterations, including the provision of a temporary outdoor bar for use when the pub is busy to ease congestion. Marston's also wants the council to allow films to be shown outside on a big screen between 10am and 11pm, Monday to Sunday.

Residents Raise Concerns

The application will be considered by the council's licensing committee on May 19, where the panel will hear a range of objections from people living nearby. A resident of Gigmill Way said: "I envisage the noise generated by sound from the film will impact on myself and my neighbours. I suspect that with the Football World Cup due to take place in June/July this year, with screenings taking place in the early hours of the morning, Marston's will, no doubt, seek to extend the licence to cover the screenings of these games. That, along with drinking in the early hours would also be unacceptable."

Child Safeguarding Issues

Another resident of Gigmill Way had concerns about the possibility of youngsters being exposed to inappropriate content in films. The objector said: "Outdoor displays cannot be controlled in terms of who sees or hears the content. This creates a situation where children may be exposed to unsuitable films, inappropriate language or adult material without any parental supervision."

Pub's Response

The Gigmill reopened in April after a £360,000 refurbishment and was rebranded under Marston's 'Grandstand' banner. Marston's said: "As the name indicates this brand is oriented around the provision of sport both shown at the premises and engagement with local amateur teams so as to reinforce community connections and support for sport in the community."
