Snowdonia Campervan Overnight Ban Lifted After Public Backlash
Snowdonia Campervan Ban Lifted After Backlash

A controversial ban on overnight parking for campervans and motorhomes in Snowdonia has been lifted following a fierce public backlash. The Eryri National Park Authority (ENPA) had introduced a restriction at 11 car parks from April, prohibiting vehicles between 10pm and 3am. However, after widespread criticism from visitors and locals, the authority has performed a U-turn.

Twelve-Month Pilot Study

On Wednesday, ENPA members agreed to allow 24-hour parking across the national park, except for two-hour limits at Llyn Tegid and Llangywer car parks, as part of a 12-month pilot study. This effectively lifts the overnight ban that had sparked outrage among motorhome owners, early-morning walkers, and sunset viewers.

Authority's Statement

An ENPA spokesperson clarified: "The Authority's decision today does not represent a change in policy and has always been the approach regarding its car parks as overnight stays have never been permitted. Eryri National Park Authority strongly encourages campervan and motorhome users to make use of the many designated campsites available within and around the National Park, helping to support local businesses and the rural economy while providing appropriate facilities for visitors."

The spokesperson added: "Following further consideration and feedback from a range of users and stakeholders, the Authority is proposing to maintain 24-hour access at the vast majority of its car parks while undertaking a wider review of overnight camping and parking issues across Eryri. This work will seek to balance opportunities for people to enjoy the National Park, including activities such as stargazing and viewing sunrises and sunsets, with the need to address issues such as litter, waste, anti-social behaviour and impacts on local communities, businesses and the environment."

Backlash and Reversal

The original restrictions, enforced at 11 car parks, prohibited parking between 10pm and 3am, triggering a major backlash from both visitors and locals. Motorhome owners, along with early-bird and sunset walkers, complained about the removal of these facilities, even though overnight stays had never been officially permitted at these sites. The decision to lift the ban marks a significant reversal in response to public pressure.
