Free Bus Pass Age Cut by 6 Years for Some Passengers

The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that the free bus pass age has been reduced by six years for passengers in certain parts of the United Kingdom. The DfT has issued clarifications regarding the eligibility rules for free bus passes, specifically for state pensioners and those who have reached state pension age.

Age Threshold Variations Across the UK

According to the DfT, most local authorities operate under the condition that free bus passes are granted to individuals who reach state pension age. In Birmingham, for example, the age threshold is set at 66. However, this age is reduced to 60 in some locations, including London and the entirety of neighbouring Wales.

The DfT states: "In England, you can get a bus pass for free travel when you reach the State Pension age. If you live in London, you can travel free on buses, tubes, and other transport when you’re 60, but only within London." Additionally, the DfT notes: "In Wales, you can get a bus pass when you reach 60. Enter your postcode to apply for a bus pass from your local council and check if you can get one sooner."

Birmingham City Council Guidelines

Birmingham City Council explains that bus passes are issued by Transport for the West Midlands (TfWM), not the council itself. The council clarifies: "You can get an older person’s bus pass when you reach State Pension age, which is currently 66. It does not matter if you’re a man or a woman. You can check when you will be eligible using the State Pension age calculator on GOV.UK. You can apply up to 4 weeks before you turn 66."

An Older Person's Travel Pass provides free bus travel across England from Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 11pm, as well as all day on weekends and public holidays. In the West Midlands, the pass also offers free travel on buses, trains, and trams during specific times: 9:30am to 11:59pm for buses, 9:30am to 11:59pm for trains in the Blue Zone, and 9:30am until the last service of the day for trams.

Application Process

Applying for an Older Person's Travel Pass online is the fastest method, taking approximately 15 minutes, according to TfWM. Once the application is submitted, applicants will receive status updates in their account and reminders when it is time to renew the pass.
