Last year, Birmingham City Council announced major changes to 27 routes across the city in a bid to improve safety. It appears that was a huge change for drivers to get used to. Months have gone by, and either some motorists haven't noticed the new signs and aren't aware, or they're just breaking the law.
Since the announcement, BirminghamLive has witnessed drivers breaking the 30mph speed limit on multiple city streets. So here is a reminder of the rules across the city.
Which roads have higher speed limits?
The only three roads with a higher speed limit are the A38(M) Aston Expressway, A38 Quinton Expressway, and A4041 Queslett Road, which forms the boundary with Walsall. All other roads in Birmingham now have a legal speed limit of 30mph or less.
Council statement on enforcement
Birmingham City Council previously said in December: "This scheme did not include new speed cameras or changes to road design, but existing cameras have been recalibrated to enforce the new speed limit. If compliance with the 30mph speed limit remains a problem, we will consider additional measures. We continue to work closely with West Midlands Police, and regional partners, to increase enforcement activity."
