Birmingham's Roads Turned into Personal Racetracks by Reckless Motorists
Selfish drivers across Birmingham are treating the city's streets as their own personal racetracks, with complete disregard for public safety. New data released by West Midlands Police through a Freedom of Information request has exposed the alarming speeds being recorded by enforcement cameras, including instances of vehicles traveling at triple the speed limit in residential areas.
Shocking Speeds Documented Across the City
The most eye-watering violation saw a Mercedes AMG CLA45 driver clocked at a staggering 155mph on the A38 Sutton Coldfield bypass. This incident occurred around lunchtime at 12:45 PM in March of last year, when the speed limit was set at 40mph. Authorities have since reduced this limit to 30mph in response to such dangerous behavior.
Equally concerning was another driver recorded at 111mph in a 30mph zone on the A3400 Stratford Road in Birmingham. This represents more than three times the legal limit, posing extreme danger to pedestrians and other road users in residential areas.
Police Data Reveals Widespread Problem
West Midlands Police documented numerous other extreme violations throughout 2024 and 2025:
- A driver reached 135mph on the Lydiate Ash Interchange at exit four for the M5 in Birmingham
- Multiple instances of drivers exceeding 40mph in 30mph zones, with 9,383 violations recorded between September and December 2024 alone
- An additional 11,977 drivers were caught driving at 40mph or more in 30mph limits between January and June 2025
20mph Zones Also Targeted by Speeders
Even areas with 20mph limits specifically designed for enhanced safety haven't been spared. On Drews Lane in Hodge Hill, one driver was recorded at 51mph in a 20mph zone during the morning hours. Another was clocked at 46mph in the same area during early morning hours.
These restrictions are typically implemented around schools, residential areas, and places with high pedestrian activity, making such violations particularly dangerous.

Increased Enforcement and Education Efforts
With more councils deploying enforcement cameras to manage traffic in busy areas, organizations like GEM Motoring Assist are encouraging drivers to refresh their knowledge of road signs and markings. The police data reveals a persistent problem with speeding that requires continued vigilance from both enforcement agencies and the driving public.
The revelations come amid growing concerns about road safety in Birmingham, with these extreme cases highlighting the potential consequences of reckless driving behavior on urban streets.
