Motorists are being cautioned about obscure mobile speed camera hotspots in frequently visited areas, as fresh data uncovers the locations where drivers are most likely to encounter these enforcement devices. An analysis of over 11,000 mobile speed camera zones has pinpointed the counties with the highest concentrations, highlighting a widespread network that many drivers may underestimate.
Top Counties for Mobile Speed Camera Sites Revealed
The data, sourced from OOONO, indicates that Derbyshire tops the list with a total of 200 mobile speed camera sites. Following closely, Lancashire, Wiltshire, and Essex each boast more than 150 sites, while the top ten counties all have over 110 locations. This extensive coverage underscores the significant presence of mobile enforcement across the UK.
Sean Morris, UK COO of the company, emphasized the scale of this enforcement. "With nearly as many regular zones across the UK as there are fixed camera locations, the scope of enforcement coverage is far greater than many drivers realise," he stated, urging increased awareness among motorists.

RAC Issues Warning on Speeding Fines and Discretion
The RAC has issued a stark warning regarding mobile speeding cameras, noting that these devices are operated by individuals who have the discretion to issue fines or more severe penalties for exceeding legal speed limits. "Mobile speeding cameras are operated by individuals, so it is up to their discretion to issue you a speeding fine - or worse - if you are over the legal speed limit," the organization cautioned.
According to the law, drivers are liable for a speeding fine immediately upon exceeding the limit, meaning that even minor infractions, such as driving 31mph in a 30mph zone or 71mph on a motorway, constitute a breach and could result in a penalty.
The RAC further explained that while the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) recommends a '10% plus 2' leeway to assist officers in using discretion, this is merely a guideline and not legally binding. "It is well worth remembering this is totally dependent on the officer who catches the speeder, and it is up to that officer whether to fine the offender or not," they added, stressing the unpredictability of enforcement.
