Police Launch Manhunt for HGV Driver Following Serious M6 Collision
Lancashire Police have launched an urgent search for a heavy goods vehicle driver who left the scene of a serious multi-vehicle crash on the M6 motorway. The incident, which occurred late on Sunday evening, has left two teenage boys with significant injuries requiring hospital treatment.
Details of the Motorway Collision
Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway between junctions 32 and 33 in Lancashire at approximately 11:16 PM on Sunday, February 15. According to police reports, the collision began when a green Nissan Micra crashed into the central reservation barrier before coming to a stop in the third lane.
A silver Toyota Celica then collided with the stationary Micra, followed by an HGV which struck the Toyota. The driver of the HGV failed to remain at the scene, prompting an ongoing police investigation to trace both the vehicle and its operator.
Injuries and Emergency Response
The driver of the Nissan Micra, a 17-year-old boy, and his 16-year-old passenger both sustained serious injuries in the crash. Paramedics treated them at the scene before transporting them to hospital, where they remain under medical care. Police, fire crews, and National Highways officers all attended the incident, which caused significant disruption to motorway traffic.
Both sides of the carriageway were closed overnight to allow for emergency response and initial investigation work. The road finally reopened shortly before 11:00 AM on Monday, though motorists still faced approximately two miles of congestion according to local traffic reports.
Police Appeal for Information and Footage
Sergeant Bex Price of the Lancashire Police Road Policing Unit expressed concern for the injured teenagers and their families while appealing for public assistance. "First and foremost my thoughts are with the two boys and their families as they receive treatment in hospital," stated Sgt. Price. "They have suffered some significant injuries as a result of this collision, and enquiries into what led to the collision are ongoing."
Police are particularly interested in dashcam footage from vehicles traveling between junctions 32 and 33 on the northbound carriageway between 11:10 PM and 11:20 PM on Sunday night. "We believe the collision also involved a HGV, and whilst offline enquiries are ongoing to trace it, we are appealing to anyone who has information or footage that could help us locate it," explained Sgt. Price.
Investigators are asking anyone with relevant information to contact Lancashire Police on 101, quoting log number 1242 of February 15. The police have thanked motorists for their patience during the extended road closures while emphasizing that their investigation remains in its early stages.
