A couple who manipulated a man into working long hours at McDonald's for paltry wages have been sentenced to prison. Jan Drevenak and Monika Olahova exploited the victim, promising him a fresh start in the UK but instead treating him as property and controlling his earnings and documents.
The Victim's Ordeal
The victim, who worked 12-hour shifts, received only £90 from over £12,000 earned between March and October 2018. Drevenak befriended the man in the Czech Republic in 2017 after he had been made redundant, promising work and accommodation in the UK.
How the Scheme Worked
The pair used family connections to secure employment at McDonald's in Caxton Gibbet, with the victim's wages paid into an account controlled by Olahova. The victim was led to believe his salary was covering transport costs and debts for food and accommodation.
Sentencing and Remarks
His Honour Judge Geoffrey Payne said during sentencing: "Slavery is a modern-day evil. All humans have the right to dignity and worth. The victim in this case was robbed of those." Drevenak was jailed for eight years and Olahova for six-and-a-half years, with both facing deportation after serving portions of their sentences.
