Hope Rescue, a South Wales dog charity, has launched its summer appeal, “Healing Paws,” after rescuing Maggie, a tiny Cocker Spaniel found wandering alone, painfully underweight, unchipped, and still producing milk for a litter of puppies she could no longer protect. The charity reports that around 70 per cent of dogs arriving at its sanctuary need medical care, and it now spends approximately £300,000 a year on veterinary bills.
Maggie's Condition and Treatment
A full veterinary examination revealed Maggie was suffering from a severe ear infection, a skin infection, open wounds caused by constant scratching, and a urine infection. She was clearly in significant discomfort. Her care plan has included medicated baths three times a week, a course of antibiotics, regular ear cleaning, urine testing, medication to dry up her milk, and a carefully managed feeding programme to help her regain weight safely. Once her skin and ear infections have healed, Maggie will be neutered to prevent any future unplanned litters.
The Impact on Hope Rescue
Maggie's story is far from unique. Every week, dogs arrive at Hope Rescue carrying the physical and emotional scars of neglect, abandonment, and acute medical emergencies. The charity's resources are stretched thin by soaring veterinary bills, prompting the launch of the Healing Paws appeal to raise vital funds.
“Every dog that comes through our doors deserves the chance to heal, both physically and emotionally, and for many of them that journey starts at the vets. Maggie's story shows just how much care some of our dogs need before they're ready to find their forever home, and we simply couldn't do it without the generosity of our supporters,” said Sara Rosser, operations manager at Hope Rescue.
How to Donate to the Healing Paws Appeal
Through the Healing Paws appeal, Hope Rescue is asking the public to donate towards medical costs faced by dogs in its care. Suggested donations include £11 for flea and worming treatment, £25 for medicated shampoo, £50 for antibiotics, and £120 for a neutering operation.
To support the appeal and help dogs like Maggie get the treatment they need, donations can be made at hoperescue.org.uk/healing-paws or directly at donate.hoperescue.org.uk with the campaign reference HealingPaws.
Hope Rescue is a dog rescue charity based in South Wales, founded by Vanessa Waddon. The charity rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes dogs in need, and campaigns on wider dog welfare issues. For more information, or to enquire about adopting or fostering a dog, visit hoperescue.org.uk.
