Birmingham man charged after station attack leaves victim critical

Paul Grant, a 61-year-old from Sparkhill, Birmingham, has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent following a violent attack at Worcester Foregate Street Station that left a 60-year-old man fighting for his life. The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, at approximately 8pm, when the victim was allegedly set upon by two men.

Attack Details

According to British Transport Police, the victim was repeatedly stamped and punched while on the ground during the assault. Emergency services attended the station and the man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Mark Hughes, 34, of Lower Chestnut Street in Worcester's Arboretum area, has also been charged with the same offence. Both men were remanded in custody and appeared in court on Tuesday, July 7 – Grant at Birmingham Magistrates' Court and Hughes at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "BTP detectives have charged two men in connection to a serious assault outside Worcester Foregate Street station. Paul Grant, 61, of Wilton Road, Birmingham, and Mark Hughes, 34, of Lower Chestnut Street, Worcester, have been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent. They have been remanded in custody to appear at court today."

The attack has sparked concerns about safety at railway stations in the region. The victim, who has not been named, was initially taken to hospital in a critical condition and later upgraded to critical but stable.

Background

British Transport Police had previously launched an appeal for witnesses following the assault. Officers have now confirmed that both suspects have been charged and are in custody. The investigation continues.
