Police have launched a probe after a significant cannabis cultivation site was found inside a pub gutted by a major fire near Solihull.

Blaze breaks out at village pub

The incident unfolded at The Railway Inn on Station Road in Balsall Common. The fire service was first alerted to the blaze, which erupted shortly before 8pm on Friday, January 16. Dramatic scenes saw thick smoke pouring from the building as four fire crews battled the inferno.

Cannabis factory discovery

West Midlands Police were called to the scene at approximately 8.45pm. Upon examination, officers made a startling discovery. A cannabis factory was in operation inside the pub, with plants spread across multiple rooms.

The pub, which had only reopened in August after a temporary closure, was immediately sealed off by police. A spokesperson confirmed that no injuries were reported in connection with the fire.

Joint investigation launched

Authorities are now working to determine the cause of the fire and the full extent of the illegal operation. Police are liaising closely with fire service investigators to establish how the blaze started.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson stated: "We're liaising with fire service investigators to establish the cause of the blaze. Enquiries are continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact us."
