Devante Hussey Brown, 23, from Castle Vale, has avoided an immediate prison sentence after attacking his sister's boyfriend with a kitchen knife. He received a 21-month suspended sentence at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to the assault, which left the victim with three puncture wounds to the back of his head.
The attack occurred at 3.45am on April 8, when Brown repeatedly punched David Wright while holding a kitchen knife. The court heard the assault was unprovoked. In a bizarre turn, Brown hugged his victim after the attack before walking away. He later handed himself in to police.
Family support and mental health history
Birmingham Crown Court was told that Brown had a history of mental health issues and had not been taking his medication at the time of the incident. His family stood by him throughout the court case, with relatives present in the public gallery.
Recorder Michelle Heeley KC gave Brown a 21-month suspended sentence, telling him: "Not to condone your behaviour but to recognise you were in a crisis." The judge said that imprisoning Brown would mean he would lose his home and not receive appropriate support, adding: "You need help and support, you are best to get that from your friends and family and community beside you."
