A disqualified motorist has been apprehended by police in Staffordshire after a pursuit involving what officers described as 'horrendous' driving. The driver was found to have an astonishing 87 penalty points on their licence.
The Chase and Capture
Officers from Staffordshire Police spotted the Audi on Thursday, December 18. The vehicle was seen travelling in the areas of Stafford and Penkridge. According to police reports, the driver failed to stop for officers and only came to a halt after being trapped in a cul-de-sac.
A Shocking Driving Record Revealed
Upon stopping the vehicle, police made a startling discovery. The driver was not only currently disqualified from driving, but their licence also showed an accumulation of 87 penalty points. Under UK law, drivers are typically disqualified after accumulating 12 points within a three-year period, making this total exceptionally rare and severe.
Staffordshire Police shared details of the incident on social media on Friday, December 19. Their post stated: "The driver of this Audi failed to stop for us yesterday and displayed some horrendous driving around Penkridge and Stafford. This is consistent with their driving record as not only are they disqualified, but they have 87 penalty points on their licence and didn't want to discuss this with us until they turned into a cul de sac."
Public Outcry and Calls for Tougher Sentencing
The police force's social media post prompted strong reactions from the public. One commenter questioned the effectiveness of the current penalty system, asking: "At what point does the magistrate realise that putting points on a licence is futile and maybe a custodial sentence might be a little more appropriate?"
Others expressed sheer disbelief at the number of points, with one person writing: "Wow I didn't realise 87 points was even possible." A third commenter suggested: "I think that prison is the only deterrent." The incident has sparked a fresh debate about the sentencing of repeat motoring offenders who continue to drive despite being disqualified.
