West Midlands Police have launched an appeal to identify several men involved in an assault on a police officer in Birmingham's Broad Street nightlife district during the early hours of Sunday, June 21.
Incident Details
The altercation is believed to have involved five men and occurred at approximately 1:30am. Police moved in to break up the incident, but the group scattered, and an officer was allegedly punched during the response.
A 20-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with assaulting a police officer. He was bailed to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on July 23.
Police Investigation
West Midlands Police confirmed this week that the officer involved had acted 'reasonably and proportionately' in response to social media footage of the incident. The force stated: “We are carrying out an investigation to identify people involved in an assault in Birmingham city centre. At around 1.30am on Sunday, June 21, officers were on Broad Street where they arrested a 20-year-old man who has since been charged with assaulting a police officer.”
The statement added: “We are aware of footage on social media showing the incident before the man is arrested. Recognising an assault has taken place we are now carrying out active enquiries to identify those involved. Although officers were in the area when this assault took place, they were involved in the arrest of another man at the time. Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to get in touch with us.”
Public Appeal
Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information to contact them via Live Chat on their website or by calling 101, quoting crime reference number 20/308133/26. The appeal comes as part of ongoing efforts to identify all individuals involved in the attack on Broad Street, a key nightlife hub in Birmingham.
