Police Officers Enter Wrong Staffordshire Home in Early Morning Address Confusion
Three police officers accidentally entered a Midlands home after responding to the wrong address during an emergency welfare call. The incident occurred in Staffordshire on the morning of Tuesday, February 10, when officers were attempting to reach a reported casualty as quickly as possible.
Mother Describes Terrifying Experience
Kellie Simm, the homeowner, was barely awake when she heard officers storm through her front door shouting "police, police, police." Ring doorbell footage captured the emergency personnel approaching her property before entering.
"I thought my husband had been in a car crash since he'd left for work just minutes earlier," Kellie explained. "I was still sort of asleep, so I wasn't sure if I was dreaming when they came through my bedroom door."
Rapid Exit After Realizing Mistake
The officers quickly realized their error after entering the home. "They took a quick look and then said they'd got the wrong address and dashed off," Kellie recalled. "One officer told me they'd just had a call saying that someone had suffered a heart attack and fell down the stairs."
Kellie noted the unusual response level for such a medical emergency. "I thought it was strange because you don't usually send three police cars, a forensic van and two ambulances to a heart attack."
Apology and Explanation from Police
One officer returned later to apologize for the intrusion and offered Kellie an incident number should she wish to make a complaint. She declined, understanding the urgency of the situation.
"I told him it was completely fine, I know they were just trying to act fast to help somebody," she said. "Who could be mad about that? I'm just glad my door was unlocked after my husband left so they didn't have to break it down!"
Tragic Outcome at Correct Address
Police later confirmed that a woman was found dead at a property on Weston Coyney in Stoke-on-Trent. Authorities emphasized there was no delay in her receiving medical care despite the initial address confusion.
A Staffordshire Police spokesperson stated: "At around 7.30am, we responded to a report of a sudden death in Weston Coyney. Sadly, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene."
Homeowner's Reaction and Concerns
Kellie described her visceral reaction to the unexpected police entry. "Honestly, I totally cacked myself. It was like some drugs bust straight off TV. Obviously I knew I wasn't in trouble or anything, but it still scares you."
She added: "We live on what is normally a very nice, quiet street. So to have police burst through your door that early in the morning is definitely a shock."
Focus on Neighbors' Welfare
After the incident, Kellie's concerns turned to her neighbors. "Afterwards I went outside to see what was going on. There was a big commotion down the road. I couldn't see much, but I saw some people were very upset an hour later."
"I was really hoping it was nothing sad or sinister," she continued. "My neighbors are all lovely and we get along really well. I'd hate to see anything happen to any of them. I hope everyone is as good as they can possibly be."
Police Explanation of the Confusion
The police spokesperson provided additional context: "In an effort to reach the casualty as quickly as possible and potentially administer life-saving medical care, officers initially entered the wrong address before speaking with ambulance staff who confirmed the correct address. Ambulance staff were already at the scene so there was no delay in treatment."
