Teenager Receives Life Sentence for Brutal Mother Murder
An 18-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the horrific murder of his own mother, whose battered body was discovered in a nature reserve undergrowth. Tristan Thomas Roberts pleaded guilty to killing 45-year-old Angela Shellis in a premeditated attack involving hammers and strangulation.
Disturbing Details Emerge in Court
The court heard how Roberts had developed a twisted fascination with hammers and spent weeks planning the murder of his mother. He purchased multiple weapons online, including hammers and knives, along with protective clothing to carry out the savage attack.
On October 24, 2025, Ms. Shellis' body was found by a member of the public near Morfa nature reserve in North Wales. She had suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head consistent with hammer attacks, along with strangulation injuries. Police quickly identified her son as the primary suspect and arrested him at their Coniston Drive home in Prestatyn.
Chilling Recordings Reveal Attack Details
Among the most disturbing evidence presented in court were audio recordings found on a Dictaphone seized from the family home. In one recording made on the day of the murder, Roberts declared he was "going to murder my mother with a sledgehammer."
The recordings revealed that Roberts initially attacked his mother in her bedroom around 11pm, keeping her prisoner for approximately four hours while he strangled her. Ms. Shellis could be heard pleading desperately for him to call emergency services during the assault.
Prosecutor Andrew Thomas KC described the recordings as serving as some "form of trophy" for Roberts, who appeared to revel in documenting his violent actions.
Elaborate Cover-Up Attempt
CCTV footage presented in court showed Roberts and his mother walking toward the Morfa area on the morning she was killed, with Roberts carrying a rucksack containing the murder weapon. After the attack, he returned home alone at 5.35am before leaving again with a carrier bag supposedly containing bleach and other cleaning materials.
Police believe Roberts attempted to forensically clean the murder scene before Ms. Shellis' body was discovered at 8.39am that morning, lying face down approximately twenty feet from a footpath.
Online Activity Reveals Disturbing Patterns
The investigation uncovered extensive digital evidence showing Roberts' preoccupation with violence. He maintained sixteen different Discord accounts and had posted graphic, misogynistic content online, including explicit intentions to kill his mother.
In the weeks leading up to the murder, Roberts spent hours researching murder methods online, even consulting an AI bot about whether to use a hammer or knife. He asked for advice on removing blood from surfaces and purchased gloves in preparation for the attack.
His laptop contained hundreds of screenshots from gaming and chat platforms where he used various aliases, some of which had been flagged for abusive and threatening content.
Family's Heartbreaking Statements
During sentencing, Ms. Shellis' daughter Sarah addressed her brother directly in court, stating: "As a close family we fought so hard to get the help you needed. Nobody ever gave up on you."
She described how the family has experienced "pain and confusion" since their mother's death, adding that nothing feels normal without her presence.
Ms. Shellis' other son, Ethan, submitted a statement expressing his "unbearable" grief and anger. "I am a shell of the person I was," he wrote. "The most important person in my life is now gone. Mum was always there for me no matter what."
Sentencing and Judicial Remarks
His Honour Rhys Rowlands sentenced Roberts to life imprisonment with a minimum term of twenty-two years and six months, reduced to twenty-two years and thirty-four days due to time already spent in custody. Roberts will remain on license for the rest of his life.
Judge Rowlands described the murder as a "truly awful way to die," particularly as it was carried out by the victim's own son. He noted that Ms. Shellis had "cared for and worried about" her son despite his disturbing behavior.
"You not only ended your mother's life - you caused dreadful anguish to the whole family," Judge Rowlands told Roberts. "The personal statements described how their lives have been devastated. No sentence I can pass can reflect their loss."
The judge emphasized that while Roberts had diagnoses of ADHD and autism, these conditions did not impair his decision-making ability regarding the murder. An assessment revealed the teenager had exhibited signs of psychosis that had escalated significantly by August 2025.
Mother's Concerns Documented
The court heard that Ms. Shellis had kept a diary documenting her growing concerns about her son's mental health and disturbing interest in weapons. She had messaged a social worker expressing awareness that Roberts had purchased a weapon and was increasingly worried about her safety.
Defense barrister David Elias KC acknowledged that a life sentence was mandatory and stated that nothing he could say would detract from the "horror" of the crime. He mentioned Roberts had experienced a traumatic childhood with physical abuse in the family setting.
Roberts had one previous conviction for possession of a bladed article in a public place and shoplifting. The comprehensive investigation by North Wales Police included analysis of digital evidence, CCTV footage, forensic examination of the crime scene, and recovery of multiple weapons and blood-stained items from the family home.
