Two women die in Bolton crash, 19-year-old arrested

Two women have died following a serious road traffic collision in Bolton on Monday morning, leading to the arrest of a teenage driver. Emergency services were called to a complex junction in the Smithills area shortly after 7.40am on 22 December 2025.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were alerted to reports of a collision at the junctions of Scout Road, Smithills Dean Road, Colliers Row Road and Coal Pit Road at approximately 7.42am. Initial reports indicate that the driver of a Volkswagen Polo was travelling along Scout Road before the vehicle collided with two pedestrians on Smithills Dean Road.

The two female pedestrians, aged 57 and 59, sustained what police described as catastrophic injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, they were both pronounced dead at the scene. The area remained cordoned off for several hours as initial investigations took place.

Driver Arrested and Police Investigation

The driver of the VW Polo, a 19-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing two deaths by dangerous driving. He was taken into police custody where he remains for questioning by detectives from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

An investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash is now underway. Officers are conducting a detailed forensic examination of the scene and reviewing local CCTV footage.

Appeal for Witnesses and Information

Police have launched a public appeal for information following the tragic incident. They are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or who may have been driving in the area around 7.40am on Monday morning, to come forward.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police stated: "We are asking for anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time the incident occurred to please come forward. This also includes anyone who witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage of it."

Motorists or residents with any relevant footage from dashcams, doorbell cameras, or CCTV are asked to contact the police immediately. The roads around the junction were expected to remain closed for a significant period while evidence was gathered.
