Shocking footage has emerged showing a wanted man striking a police officer over the head with the officer's own baton during a violent scuffle on Soho Road in Handsworth, Birmingham. The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, when two police officers attempted to arrest Mahroy Stephenson, a 30-year-old from the Bartley Green area.
Footage Captures the Assault
The video, widely shared on social media, begins with officers shouting commands such as 'get on the floor' and 'stop resisting' as they try to subdue Stephenson. During the struggle, a baton falls to the ground, and Stephenson manages to grab it before striking one of the officers in the face. The officer is seen collapsing onto the pavement, while Stephenson then flees the scene on a bicycle.
Police Appeal for Information
West Midlands Police issued an appeal on Saturday, July 4, urging the public to help locate Stephenson. A spokesperson stated: 'We're investigating an incident on Soho Road, Birmingham, and want to speak to Mahroy Stephenson. During a stop and search by officers yesterday morning (Fri) one officer suffered a head injury. He was treated at hospital and thankfully has since been discharged.'
Stephenson is wanted on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, as well as for an assault alleged to have occurred on June 21. The force has urged anyone with information to contact them immediately on 999, quoting crime reference 20/309319/26.

The attack has sparked concern among local residents, with many expressing shock at the level of violence displayed. West Midlands Police have increased patrols in the area and are reviewing CCTV footage to track Stephenson's movements after the incident. The officer involved is recovering at home after being discharged from hospital.
