MAFS Australia Groom Danny Hewitt's Off-Camera Conduct Draws Sharp Criticism from Show Hosts
The 2026 season of Married At First Sight Australia has introduced viewers to a memorable cast of brides and grooms. While much attention has focused on participants like Bec and Gia, it is groom Danny Hewitt who is now facing significant scrutiny from his colleagues behind the scenes.
Hosts Label Danny as "Rudest Groom" and Difficult to Interview
According to Laura Byrne and Brittany Hockley, presenters of the MAFS after show, Danny Hewitt exhibited challenging behavior when cameras were not rolling. In an interview with New Idea magazine, Laura detailed their experiences, stating that from the very beginning, Danny was defensive and hard to communicate with.
"From day one, even when he was very, very loved by the public and the questioning wasn’t even abrasive, if it was in any way challenging of his person, he was the only one that instantly got into defence mode," Laura explained. "And he was very hard to speak to because he constantly speaks over the top of you."
Both hosts noted that Danny's tendency to talk over others was a tactic to confuse interviewers, describing it as "incredibly rude." They emphasized that this off-camera demeanor revealed a side of him that was "not as nice" as his on-screen persona.
Behind-the-Scenes Footage and Social Media Apology
Further controversy arose when behind-the-scenes footage surfaced showing Danny making harsh comments and jokes about fellow contestant Bec. In response, Danny Hewitt took to social media to issue a public apology for his actions.
"I do have a very dry sense of humour, and sometimes it can come across wrong, especially on TV, especially to people who don’t know me," he said. "But I’m not here to make excuses or blame it on a sense of humour or anything like that, I’m here to own up to my mistakes and just apologise."
Danny concluded his apology by expressing remorse "from the bottom" of his heart. He later reunited with Bec on MAFS: After The Experiment, where he offered another apology, attempting to mend fences after the on-air and off-air incidents.
This revelation adds a new layer to the ongoing drama of MAFS Australia 2026, highlighting the complexities of reality TV personalities when the cameras stop rolling.
