Football and Faith: Behind the Scenes

Football fans can go behind the scenes at a famous local sports stadium on Wednesday, September 16 to discover the history of the Football League founder member. Supporter liaison officer Robert Houseman will guide small groups around the grounds and show off the new interactive mural.

Robert Houseman, Accrington Stanley supporter liaison officer, said: “It’s always fantastic to welcome people to the Wham Stadium and give them a look behind the scenes. Accrington Stanley has so many great stories to tell, and Heritage Open Days is a brilliant opportunity to share the history of the club with visitors.”

Guided tours at St James’ Church on Thursday, September 17 will showcase local architectural beauty alongside an important military artefact. Visitors can view the original Accrington Pals flag that troops carried into battle in 1916.

Industrial Revolution Walk and Mosque Tours

History enthusiasts can take a peaceful walking tour through Stanhill Village on Friday, September 18 to explore an area at the heart of the Industrial Revolution. The guided route visits six key locations, including the cottage where James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny.

One of the largest mosques in the UK, Raza Jamia Masjid, is welcoming visitors on Saturday, September 19 to tour its facilities and learn about Islamic culture. Guests can view an extensive exhibition and get a preview of a brand-new faith school without needing to book in advance.

Family Fun at Haworth Art Gallery

Families can finish the festival weekend on Sunday, September 20 at Haworth Art Gallery by stepping back in time to experience life in an Arts and Crafts home. Children can meet costumed servants, dress up in period clothing, and play traditional games.

Cllr Kate Walsh, portfolio holder for culture, heritage and arts at Hyndburn Borough Council, said: “Every year Heritage Open Days are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Hyndburn’s incredible history and heritage. I’d encourage everyone to come along, explore and enjoy these incredible free events.”

Murray Dawson, chair of #AmazingAccrington and managing director of Scott Dawson Advertising, commented: “There are some amazing stories behind the places we see every day in Hyndburn, and this is a fantastic chance to discover them. We’ve got so much to shout about, Heritage Open Days really brings those stories to life and we support this initiative. I encourage everyone to visit at least one that they have not been to before.”
