The West Midlands Town of Culture 2025 shortlist has been announced, and Shropshire has been notably absent from the list. The shortlist includes four towns: Nuneaton, Stourbridge, Wednesbury, and Willenhall. The decision has left local leaders in Shropshire feeling snubbed, as the county had high hopes for one of its towns to be recognized.
Shortlist Details and Criteria
The Town of Culture award, now in its third year, aims to celebrate the cultural vibrancy of towns across the West Midlands. The winner receives a £20,000 grant to support cultural activities and events. The shortlist was selected by a panel of judges from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and Culture Central. According to the WMCA, the decision was based on applications that demonstrated strong community engagement, cultural programming, and potential for impact.
Reaction from Shropshire
Local officials in Shropshire expressed disappointment. Councillor Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “We are obviously disappointed that none of our towns made the shortlist. We have a rich cultural heritage and many vibrant communities, and we feel that the application process may not have fully captured that.” The council had supported bids from several towns, including Oswestry and Ludlow.
Previous Winners and Impact
The Town of Culture title has previously been awarded to Leamington Spa (2023) and Coventry (2022). The initiative is part of the WMCA’s broader strategy to boost cultural tourism and local economies. The winner of the 2025 title will be announced later this year.
Future Opportunities
Despite the snub, Shropshire officials are already looking ahead. The WMCA has indicated that other funding opportunities exist for cultural projects. Councillor Motley added: “We will continue to support our towns in applying for other grants and initiatives to ensure that Shropshire’s cultural scene thrives.” The shortlist decision has sparked a broader debate about how cultural funding is distributed across the region.
