ITV has made the decisive move to cancel its prime-time medical drama, Malpractice, confirming the show will not be recommissioned for a third series.
The End of the Investigation
The broadcaster has pulled the plug on the programme following its second season, which aired earlier this year in the spring of 2025. A spokesperson for ITV delivered the final verdict, stating that while they are proud of the two series, there are no plans for a continuation.
The show, which first premiered in 2023, returned after a two-year hiatus with a brand-new case for its second run. Each series of the drama was standalone, focusing on a different investigation into potential medical wrongdoing.
Hopes for the Future Dashed
The cancellation comes despite creator Grace Ofori-Attah expressing her hopes for more seasons earlier this year. In an interview with RadioTimes, she revealed, "I've always got ideas. If ITV wants to give me some more series, then I will definitely come up with some stories for them."
She had also shared her desire to see the main characters, Dr Norma Callahan and Dr George Adjei, become a staple of UK television. The roles were played by Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé, who both returned for the second series.
Cast and Story of the Final Series
The second series centred on the Medical Investigation Unit's (MIU) probe into psychiatrist Dr James Ford, portrayed by Tom Hughes. The storyline followed the aftermath of a devastating night where Dr Ford was torn between a postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a psychotic patient, leading to a patient's death.
The supporting cast for the final season included Selin Hizli, Zoë Telford, Rick Warden, and Ace Bhatti.
In an official statement to The Sun, an ITV spokesperson said: "We’re very proud of the two series of Malpractice and grateful to everyone who supported the show. Commissioning decisions involve many factors and while there are no plans for a third series, we’d like to extend our thanks to Grace Ofori-Attah and the team at World Productions for producing two brilliant series."
The decision marks the end of the road for the MIU, leaving fans without the further investigations they may have been hoping for.
