This captivating evening promises to transport attendees on a journey of remarkable exploration and historical discovery, featuring two distinguished speakers.
An Evening of Daring Exploration
Scheduled for Tuesday, February 24, the event will commence at 7pm at the prestigious New Hall, Winchester College. The night will be opened by the highly sought-after speaker and Honorary Professor at the University of Winchester, Ed Rochead. His presentation, Going South: The Daring Journeys of Amy Johnson, offers an inspiring deep dive into the life and legacy of pioneering aviator Amy Johnson.
Celebrating a British Aviation Pioneer
Ed Rochead's talk will illuminate Johnson's extraordinary achievements, including her record-breaking solo flight to Australia in 1930 and her subsequent journey to South Africa. The lecture will explore the significant obstacles she overcame in a male-dominated field, highlighting her resilience and determination. Furthermore, it will shed light on her personal connections to Hampshire, examining how these local ties influenced her career and character, providing a unique regional perspective on a national icon.
A Thrilling Antarctic Expedition
Following this, at 8.30pm, the stage will be taken by BAFTA award-winning broadcaster, TV presenter, and historian Dan Snow. He will present Searching for Endurance, a thrilling account of his 2022 Antarctic expedition to locate Ernest Shackleton's long-lost ship. Audiences will be captivated as Dan recounts the perilous journey across the treacherous ice of the Weddell Sea and the historic moment when the Endurance shipwreck was discovered, resting 3000 metres beneath the surface.
